Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund

Financial Protection for Ontario's Vehicle Buyers

The Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund compensates consumers who suffer a financial loss arising from a transaction with an Ontario-registered dealer. The maximum claim amount that one can receive from the Compensation Fund is $45,000.

The Last Resort

The Compensation Fund is intended as the last resort for vehicle-buyers. In many cases, consumers who have a problem with a purchase can resolve the situation by talking with the dealer. If the issue cannot be resolved, the Compensation Fund may be able to mediate without filing a formal complaint to the Compensation Fund.

If no other resolution is possible, then consumers may submit a formal claim for financial compensation. Transactions must meet strict eligibility criteria and claims must be accompanied by full supporting documentation – otherwise, your claim could be ruled ineligible. Keep all records related to your purchase.

Buyer Beware:
Compensation Fund Does Not Cover Private Transactions

The Compensation Fund protects consumers who purchase from Ontario-registered dealers – it does not apply to private sales. If you are the victim of a curbsider, you cannot apply for financial compensation!

Supported by Ontario's Registered Dealers

Each and every Ontario-registered dealer contributes to the Compensation Fund as part of their registration. OMVIC administers the Compensation Fund on behalf of a Board of Trustees.
